What is AI prospecting?
Classic prospecting is hours of manual work: searching for companies, reading websites, typing data into a spreadsheet, writing emails from scratch. A salesperson spends 60-70% of their time on tasks that aren't customer conversations. AI prospecting turns those hours into minutes — but only if you know where AI speeds things up and where it gets in your way.
The key difference: AI is a tool in the process, not the topic. AI prospecting works on 4 levels:
- Finding — generating lists of companies and decision makers,
- Researching — collecting and synthesizing data about a company and a person,
- Qualifying — assessing whether a lead fits the ICP,
- Personalizing — creating the first contact sentence based on research. The human still owns: market choice, ideal customer definition, data verification and the final contact tone. The split is simple: AI does repetitive and analytical work, the human does decision and relationship work.
- BAD
- company X → an hour of Googling, reading 5 sites, note-taking, manual analysis of 'do they buy?'.
- GOOD
- the same lead → 3-minute research (what they do, 3 problem hypotheses, 1 personalization), 2-minute ICP fit assessment, a ready first email sentence. The rest — whether it's a good lead, whether to write to them — stays with you.
You are a B2B prospecting advisor. Context: I sell [PRODUCT/SERVICE] for [CUSTOMER SEGMENT]. Task: Assess which stages of my prospecting process would gain the most from AI: 1. List the 5 activities I repeat most often (research, searching, note-taking, writing) 2. For each, assess: can AI speed it up (YES/NO) and by how much (0-100%) 3. Point out 2 things I should DO MYSELF even with AI Format: a table + 2 summary sentences.
Variations & alternative scenarios
Team version: analyze the workflow of a 3-person SDR team and point out where AI relieves each of them.
Audit version: compare my current prospecting (described in 5 sentences) with what it would look like with AI.
Practical exercise
List the 5 activities you do in prospecting this week. Next to each write: is it repetitive (YES/NO), how many minutes it takes, could AI speed it up. Summarize: how many minutes a week you get back.
