Recognizing readiness and close techniques

AI Sales 11 min
Business problem

Two mistakes in closing: 1) a premature close — the client gave no signals, the question 'do you want to buy?' raises resistance and pushes the deal back, 2) no close — the client gives signals and the salesperson doesn't close ('I'll get back to you with a quote') and the deal dies in silence. Both come from not reading signals.

Proven method

Closing in 3 stages:

  1. READ SIGNALS: questions about prices and terms, 'what does implementation look like', 'where do we start', saying 'we'/'us', asking for materials for the decision maker, asking about deadlines — these are buying signals,
  2. CHOOSE THE TECHNIQUE by stage: TRIAL CLOSE (test the water): 'If this were to work at your place, what would be the first step?' — without commitment, DIRECT CLOSE: 'Can I prepare a contract for [scope]?' — only after clear signals, NEXT-STEP CLOSE: 'Then let's set the demo with [decision maker] for Thursday' — closing through the next step, URGENCY: only a real reason (end of quarter, season, implementation start) — never artificial,
  3. PROCUREMENT: when the client says 'tender'/'purchasing' — prepare for it (documents, timelines, decision makers) — it's a stage, not a wall. AI helps analyze: whether the deal is ready (buying signals + decision + budget + timeline = ready), whether it's a premature close (no signals, no decision maker), what the risk is, which close to use. The rule: you close when the client showed readiness — not when you want to close.

BAD
Improvised general pitch lacking buyer context or verified data.
GOOD
During the call the client: 'How long does implementation take?' 'What does migration from spreadsheets look like?' 'Will our salespeople get training?' — these are signals. You: TRIAL: 'If we were to start, what would you need in the first week?' → the answer shows readiness. DIRECT (after a positive signal): 'Can I prepare a contract with implementation in [deadline]?' NEXT-STEP (when the decision needs someone else): 'Then let's set 30 min with [decision maker] — I'll show the scope and cost. Thursday or Friday?'. AI after the call: 'buying signals: 4 (questions about implementation, migration, training, deadline), decision maker: absent — risk, timeline: confirmed, recommendation: a next-step close with the decision maker'.
Ready-to-use prompt
You are a closing coach.

Context: I sell [PRODUCT]. Call/notes: [PASTE — client questions, signals, decision makers].

Task: Analyze the deal's readiness:
1. Buying signals from the call (list from the transcription/notes)
2. Readiness: ready / almost / too early + why (decision, budget, timeline, decision maker)
3. Recommended technique: trial / direct / next-step / urgency + a ready script (max 60 words)
4. If procurement: a plan for that stage (documents, deadlines, contact)
5. Premature close risks and how to avoid them
6. 3 closing variants (different tones: confident, questioning, with a next step)

Variations & alternative scenarios

Large deal version: close after many stages (demo → quote → procurement).

Fast deal version: a trial close in the first call.

Practical exercise

Analyze your last deal (or a fictional one): list the buying signals, assess readiness, write 3 close variants. Write down which technique you'll use in the next call and when.
